On the day that Sharon Masereka met Paul Muhindo, neither of them knew that their fate had been sealed. The two songbirds belonged to two different acapella groups; Masereka to His Grace with five other girls and Muhindo For Him, a group of six boys.
Incidentally, the two groups were invited to the same church where they both performed, and so, met.
“After we performed, he came and said hello to all of us and took all our numbers and later, called me. When he called, he confided that he had wanted my number but couldn’t ask for it because he felt shy, so he asked for all our numbers. That is how our connection started,” she says.
Muhindo, on the other hand, shares that what attracted him to her that first time was her talent. “Later on, when I got to know her better, I got to understand that she was a very kind-hearted, hardworking person, and that continued to attract me to her. Then, I knew that I had to spend the rest of my life with her,” he says.
The two officially started dating on August 4, 2012 and eight years after they met, in 2018, he popped the question.
The proposal
“The proposal was not that flashy. He invited me for dinner at Kampala Forest Resort and I didnt know anything. He then proposed. I said yes because I loved him so much. He was an honest man for all the time we had dated, loving, faithful, serious and committed to me and I could trust him. We also had many other things that brought us together; we were of the same religion, tribe, so he was really heaven-sent, Masereka notes. Muhindo adds that the reason he did it this way was that he wanted something intimate because the promise to spend the rest of their lives together was a covenant between just the two of them.
The occasions
On December 2, 2018, the couple had their introduction ceremony and almost one year after, on December 1, 2019, exchanged their vows at Bunga Seventh-Day Adventist Central Church and a reception thereafter at Kampala Central Church, Gaddafi Road.
Preparations
The couple notes that they were able to successfully prepare for their wedding because they gave themselves ample time to get ready. The following year after their introduction, they saved for their wedding and with support from family and friends, they were able to meet their Shs18.2m wedding budget.
They invited 400 guests, though the number reached 500 people on the wedding day.
“We also had a committed committee of strong guys who made sure everything went as planned. We also got amazing offers from friends who are service providers. For example, our cake was made by my longtime friend, who just asked us to buy the materials that were needed. For entertainment, my band Rhythm256 played for the occasion for free plus our friends the Her loved him so much. Her Memories
Masereka shares that what she loved most about her wedding was that she enjoyed the day, so she had lots of fun, surrounded by friends and family. “The food and drinks were enough and most of my friends told me that they carried cartons of soda and food back home. I also enjoyed the dancing! Additionally, being a fashion designer, I made my own outfits for the wedding, from the wedding dress to the changing dress, so that made it feel really special,” she adds.
Like Masereka, Muhindo also enjoyed watching his wife dance to the music. “Sharon was all over the place, pulling all these moves that I couldn’t keep up with but it was really beautiful seeing everybody cheering, and happy. The dances were really crazy that at some point I thought we would be thrown out of church,” he says.
“The other thing was speaking to my sister who couldn’t make it to the wedding because she couldn’t travel to be with us, though we had pushed the wedding dates to enable her to make it. We had her on video call, and it was really an emotional moment,” he adds.
Counting the years
When asked how they have been able to grow their relationship, the couple agreed that first and foremost, they are friends, “So we are open to each other and understand each other, listen to each other and we always pray together. That is how we are able to grow our relationship everyday,” Masereka says.
“I can say, marriage is all about compromise and sacrifices because you become one, so things change a bit, but if you marry your friend, then marriage won’t be hard. It’s definitely not a bed of roses, it has its ups and downs but things will be much easier if you are friends. It gets easier to communicate and accommodate each other’s flaws,” says Muhindo.
