By the day, new ‘customs’ are added to introduction ceremonies as a way of spicing them up and making them more entertaining. However, while doing this, few people take a moment to think through whether they are doing too much to a point of demeaning their culture.
During a conference aimed at equipping ceremonial speakers with more knowledge about the Buganda culture, the katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga went expressed how disappointed he is in the way introduction ceremonies have shifted from the right procedure to something totally different.
According to him, the acts of dancing inappropriately yet dressed in the cultural wear of Buganda is not right. Besides this, people have gone an extra mile to use inappropriate words during these ceremonies.
The Kattikiro condemned the act of splashing money at a bride or couple during the ceremony. He says this is a sign of disrespect and a speaker at a ceremony shouldn’t seat back and watch this happen.
“You can change anything you want but two things one can never change are the aspects of culture and your clan,” HE CONCLUDED.
